Ten Thousand Waves- Santa Fe

Began my day in downtown Santa Fe eating breakfast at The French Pastry Shop and Restaurant, viewing abstract art at The Signature Gallery, and shopping at Mavericks. Moving around New Mexico, I explored everything from Taos to the Carlsbad Caverns. I was ready to feel like myself again after all of that movement. I craved stillness, and I saw my visit to Ten Thousand Waves as an opportunity to acknowledge the kinks in my body blessed upon me by gardening.

Around 11 AM, with a bathing suit and curiosity, I arrived. Ascending a paved stairwell, I left all my worries behind. I was greeted and offered a kimono with complimentary tea. I then made my way to the restroom to change. All the facilities at Ten Thousand Waves are connected by an outdoor corridor. Winter is just around the corner as fall bids us adieu, I wondered, would I be cold with only a bathing suit beneath my kimono? As I entered the bath I recognized no discomfort, instead I felt balance between, and even enjoyment of the cool wind on my steamy hot skin as I sank deeper and deeper into relaxation. Although I wasn’t getting my shiatsu massage treatment until 3 PM, I spent my first few hours preparing my body for an experience I never knew I needed in my life forever.

In the waiting room, I found solace close to the fireplace whilst savoring fresh matcha tea. The anticipation built and I reminded myself to maintain composure. I didn’t want to disrupt the tranquil atmosphere. A worker checked in with me,  “I’m guessing you’re Joy?” I nod, and she briefs me about the massage and assured me that my masseuse would greet me shortly. I requested to be met outside so I can soak my feet. She smiled, “it may get a little chilly out there, would you like an extra kimono?” I put it on, and with tea in hand I leave to enjoy the red-orange leaves descending from branches as a small stream tumbles into a koi pond. This moment is enchanting. How could I feel so decompressed when my massage hadn’t happened yet?

A woman appeared in front of me wearing all black and a cozy bun and introduced herself as my masseuse. We walked down the stairs into her private quarters. I let go of my body as my face rested into the headrest. Her hands slowly danced on my back with pleasant brainwaves playing in the background. Tensions that were stubborn in my back let go of me with ease. I haven’t been the same since.
